Villages like Bernac, La Roque or the well known Sarlat will make you want to come back for a vacation. Or maybe you won’t want to leave.

Your vacation destination will invite you to take the Route des Vins de Bergerac and follow the Vézère River. You will go up the Lascaux Caves and reach Collonges-la-Rouge and its 25 towers. You will probably reach the pretty Sarlat-la-Canéda and its markets. Why is the Dordogne Valley so special? The pictorial imagery of the region does not lie. It is indeed France as you imagined it. A few ruins, beautiful vineyards as far as the eye can see and breathtaking castles.

Your rental stay in the Périgord noir will immerse you in the best of France from yesterday to today. It is necessary that the Dordogne and its valley prove to be both very welcoming to the idea of receiving new onlookers and otherwise very faithful to the authenticity of its lands. One of the most striking assets of the region is its ability to be an ideal host without being touristy. The valley needs nothing more to charm, just itself. The experiences are authentic, the sensations are real. Everything is in place, in an organic way, nothing is superfluous. If you’re a lover of the real thing, the Valley is for you!

Authenticity in the Dordogne is all about the table. There is nothing like a good market to get acquainted with the raw materials of the local gastronomy. You’ll find markets in every town. What if your self-catering rental with pool is not far from one? Those of Sarlat-la-Canéda, Bergerac, Issigeac and Périgueux win their letters of nobility. An incredible market, in summer and winter alike, and a big hit with locals and visitors alike. The square is full of fresh meat, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and bread. Choosing the Dordogne Valley as a destination for your rental is also to allow yourself the small pleasure of tasting the good food of the region.

What to discover in the sumptuous Black Perigord Valley?

Vacation rentals in France with a pool will give you the opportunity to explore the expanse of the Dordogne. The Dordogne, also known as the Périgord, is a region in southwestern France that consists of four sub-regions:

  • Black Périgord
  • Green Périgord
  • White Périgord
  • Purple Périgord

At our house, the rental for your vacation will be in the beautiful Black Périgord.

You will find a plethora of vacation activities and unusual places to discover during your rental stay. Some of the must-do activities and places include:

  • visiting castles
  • prehistoric caves
  • discovering Perigord gastronomy
  • visiting gardens
  • discovering villages

The castles of the Black Perigord

Chateau de Castelnaud

Proudly standing above the village of Castelnaud, the castle is one of the best known and most visited in France. It owes its reputation to its rich history, the ground of the feud between the French and the English during the 100 years war. From its heights, you have one of the best views of the valley.

Château des Milandes

Also known as Josephine Baker’s castle, it is the place where the prominent dancer and resistance fighter lived for years with her twelve adopted children.

Prehistoric caves

Lascaux 4

In the 1940s, schoolchildren discovered by chance the entrance to the cave of Lascaux. From then on, the place became the popular attraction, which led the authorities to close the cave to the public. Since then, a number of replicas, as a tourist attraction, has been created. Lascaux 4 stands out as the best of them. Located in Montignac, the modern center will immerse you in prehistoric France thanks to the use of 3D projection.

Font-de-Gaume

This time it is not a replica, but a real cave from 20,000 years ago. The Font-de-Gaume cave, located in the former commune of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac in the Périgord Noir, features more than 200 engravings and Magdalenian paintings.

Gouffre de Proumeyssac

Located a short drive from the town of Le Bugue, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is a natural underground cave that amazes with its limestone rock formations.

The villages of the Dordogne Valley

When it comes to unique towns and villages to visit during your vacation, there is no shortage of places to go! The region is home to 10 of the 152 most beautiful villages in France. It’s impossible not to mention Sarlat-la-Canéda, the jewel in the crown of the beautiful Dordogne or the town of Beynac. The latter hugs the hill beneath its castle. Moreover, it is ideally located near a river. The walk from the top of its village is for the most daring among us. Indeed, this one is marked by the side of the cliff, composed of alleys all more steep than the others.

Perigord gastronomy

The Black Perigord is not only a mecca for history and castles, but also for good food! Who says good food, says good wine! Many vineyards were destroyed in the late 19th century by the passage of the phylloxera virus. But Bergerac and its surroundings are still full of tasty wines that are waiting for you. Your vacation rental in the Périgord Noir will offer you the perfect opportunity to visit a vineyard and taste the good grapes with which the tasteful wonders of France are made.

The Gardens

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

The Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac are one of the most beautiful romantic gardens in France. They are located on the heights of the Dordogne Valley and have paths lined by 150,000 hand-pruned boxwoods. It is home to falls, clearings and a superb view of the valley. In summer, every Thursday, the place is transformed into a “candlelight” evening. The garden is then covered with candles and gives place to activities. A place to discover absolutely.

The Gardens of Eyrignac

To evoke the Dordogne without its emblematic Gardens of Eyrignac admits itself inconceivable. Located about ten kilometers from Sarlat, they encircle an ancient manor known for its 300 topiary sculptures. Shrubs, trees and cut hedges make the place famous for its striking patterns. You can also enjoy the excellent restaurant and souvenirs in the gift store at the entrance to the Gardens. The Eyrignac estate has been in the same family for 22 generations, offering a very personal aspect to its visit.
